Representatives from Temple Carrig School met with the Tánaiste and Minister for Finance, Simon Harris TD and the Minister for Education, Hildegarde Naughton TD along with officials in Government Buildings yesterday to discuss the delivery of a long-promised extension for the school.

In 2021, Temple Carrig School was promised an extension when the School agreed to a Department of Education request to increase capacity from 750 students to 1,000 students. The School increased its intake accordingly and now has close to 950 students, but the extension project has stalled and has not yet been sanctioned by the Department of Education to apply for planning permission, nearly 5 years later.

Commenting on the meeting with the Tánaiste and Minister Naughton, Garrett Fennell, Chair of the Temple Carrig Board of Management said that the meeting was positive as Minister Naughton confirmed that the Temple Carrig Extension was a priority for her Department given the pressure for school places locally. There were also indications given by officials that they would progress dealing with the extension within the next two weeks.

He said; “We are grateful to the Tánaiste for arranging and attending this meeting with Minister Naughton and her officials and we look forward to seeing real progress with the extension in the coming weeks.

“The school and the local community need this extension as a priority and are pleased that there is at least a timeline and a commitment for progressing the project.”

Deborah Crean, School Principal welcomed the meeting and noted the strong community support for the extension to be delivered.

“Temple Carrig collected over 3,000 signatures in a week on a petition to have the school extension prioritised and delivered without further delay. We are very grateful to all those who signed the petition, including students, parents, staff, former students and members of the wider community. The timely delivery of this extension will help to address capacity constraints in Temple Carrig School and the wider community”

The school said that it will provide updates on the extension to keep the community informed of progress.
