Public access to the iconic Wicklow Head Lighthouse off Dunbur Road in Wicklow appears to have been closed off, preventing locals and residents enjoying the scenic walk and breathtaking coastal views from the lighthouse station.

Green Party TD, Steven Matthews visited the site last week following complaints from locals and found that road had been locked off and that security were present and refusing access to locals and residents to visit the landmark site.

“I have visited this site on many occasions, and it is one of the most enjoyable and scenic walks in Wicklow. The lighthouse is an incredible heritage building and the walking route brings you down to the old lighthouse station providing amazing views our over the Irish Sea.

The lighthouse was constructed in 1781 to prevent mariners from confusing Wicklow Head with the lights of Howth Head and Hook Head, whilst the headland station was built in 1818 and automated as recently as 1994.

“Apparently, this situation arose last year too with the access road gated and locked off but the access had been reinstated and was enjoyed freely upon until recently.

I have written to Wicklow County Council to seek clarification on access rights and landownership, and I hope a resolution can be found that will restore pedestrian access for all to enjoy.

“I understand landowners seeking to protect their land from trespass and the concern they have regarding liability, but this site has a clear access path and has strong cultural and heritage importance for Wicklow.

“It is incredibly disappointing for visitors and locals with their children to be turned back and refused access to a famous Wicklow landmark.”
