Sustainable Greystones is campaigning for Greystones residents to make online submissions to the WCC Consultation Hub in favour of a default traffic speed limit of 30kmh throughout residential Greystones or as a minimum mandating periodic 30kmh speed zones in the vicinity of all schools and places where crowds regularly gather.

There are multiple reasons why this traffic speed zone reduction is desirable for the community, the main ones being…

• Safety – This lower traffic speed will reduce the likelihood of local road deaths and injuries significantly
• Air Quality – This lower traffic speed will reduce toxic exhaust pipe air emissions and improve local air quality
• Carbon Dioxide – This lower speed will reduce the amount of transport greenhouse gas emissions and reduce our carbon footprint
• Ireland’s international commitments – Ireland has signed the Stockholm Declaration of 2020 committing to make these urban traffic speed reductions
• Greystones Municipal District – In 2021 Greystones Council Representatives passed a motion in favour of periodic 30kmh traffic speed zones at all school zones in Greystones
• International precedent – Numerous villages, towns and cities across Europe have already adopted these standards. Spain introduced a nationwide 30kmh residential speed zone limit in 2021. Wales will do likewise in 2023, with Scotland in 2024.
