hey say a secret to a long marriage is never hating each other’s guts at exactly the same time.

Nonetheless, it’s hard to imagine Greystones residents Sam and Margaret have ever had a truly bad day together.

How else could you explain the constant joking and laughing?

That’s the true secret to a long and happy relationship – being able to make each other laugh. Even when one of you has to use a wheelchair to get around and the other one takes about five minutes to get out of the front seat of a car.

With their daughter Carol having entered the winning poem in Theatre Lane’s recent VIP Love Lunch competition, 81-year-old Sam and 85-year-old Margaret – who have lived in Greystones since 1950, and got married in 1958 – headed out for a very special Valentine’s meal this afternoon. Not only have this ridiculously happy and slightly mischievous couple got a life of love together to celebrate on Valentine’s Day, but it also happens to be Margaret’s birthday today.

Daughter Carol and son Eamon were on hand to make sure these young lovebirds made it to their big Valentine’s date on time and intact, whilst Theatre Lane Cafe‘s big cheese, John Hartnett, was on hand to make sure Sam and Margaret got the full VIP treatment.

You can read Carol’s wonderful poem below. Suffice to say, all the love poems entered were special, and wonderful, and it would have been magical to have everyone who entered the competition together, for one big melting pot of love.

But, you know, that’s illegal. Except in Kilcoole. And no one really wants to go there for Valentine’s Day.
