Kiss my tulips…
atest press release from Powerscourt House & Gardens, issued on Monday, April 25th 2022…
Don’t miss the opportunity to see over 30,000 tulips in bloom at this year’s Annual Tulip Display at Powerscourt Gardens.
This year at the Tulip Display there is a record 51 varieties of tulips replicated every 5 metres over 120 metres in an explosion of pastel shades – pink, lilac, purple, yellow, peach and white which look dreamlike in the spring sunlight. These include Triumph, Single and Double Earlies, Single and Double Lates, Darwin Hybrids, Lily Flowering, Parrot, Fringed, Botanical, etc. New varieties will open every few days over the next few weeks into mid-May with a unique variety of black tulips still to bloom.
However, one tulip which had the tiger stripes was estimated to be sold for $750,000 at the height of Tulipmania. The flame-like effect, streaks or feathering on the petals of tulips are caused by a naturally occurring virus which infects the bulb but brings added beauty to many varieties of tulips.
