These trains were made for walking…
atest press release from Jennifer Whitmore TD, issued on Friday,
May 2nd 2025…
“While I welcome the simplification of fares and the reductions for some towns, this new fare structure has had an adverse impact on thousands of people in my constituency. It is deeply concerning to me that towns like Greystones and Kilcoole are facing significant fare increases,” Deputy Whitmore stated.
“Rail fares for adults in Greystones have surged by 30%, which is completely counterproductive when you consider our climate goals. We are currently facing an urgent need to reduce transport emissions and avoid substantial EU fines for failing to meet our climate targets,” Deputy Whitmore continued.
“Until we get our transport emissions under control, there should be no increases in public transport fares. Tánaiste, will you direct Iarnród Éireann to reconsider these increases?” Deputy Whitmore questioned.
“In response to my question in the Dáil, Tánaiste Harris acknowledged that the issue of rail fare increases for towns like Greystones and Kilcoole need to be addressed. He informed me that he was willing to engage with the National Transport Authority to review the situation, so I’ll be following up with him on this to ensure that action is taken,” Deputy Whitmore explained.
“Disincentivising public transport use will only push people back into their cars, exacerbating our emissions problem. We must invest in climate action measures that encourage public transport use, not penalise it, and this fare hike does precisely the opposite,” Deputy Whitmore noted.

First we have the Aircoach cancelled. Simon Harris huffs and puffs about engaging with the NTA to get Wexford bus the permit to pick up airport passengers (in Kilmac not Greystones) 2 months of weighty deliberations by NTA and YESSS they approve the permit. Simon Harris claims a win! Grand. HOWEVER,………………. then came Wicklow CC and their approvals procedure. Ahh… consultants needed. To decide can a bus company pick up passengers at a stop where it already stops??
So, we have to drive to the airport and pay high parking fees. Now they raise the train fares by 30%?????????? Is somebody in government DELIBERATELY trying to sabotage our already meagre efforts to reduce carbon emissions? It seems like it to me.
