Wicklow Lift That Camogie Cup

ith a full-time score of 2-08 to 0-04, it was a very definite win for Wicklow at the Eir All-Ireland Championships U16 C Final on Saturday.

Condolences to Cavan, of course, but even they will have to admit that our girls put on one hell of a camogie display.

And in among the 15-strong team representing Wicklow were four Greystonians – Grace O’Neill, Jessica Barrie, Áine Ryan and Dearbhla Kinsella.

The rest of the team comprised of Holly Byrne in goals alongside Inez Sosnowska, Christina O’Sullivan, Lucy Byrne, Eirin Fanning, Helen Winterbotham, Karen O’Brien, Sadie Croke, Danielle Shannon, Anna Cullen, Maebh Molloy, Lea Keogh and Siun Byrne.

On the score sheet for Wicklow were Danielle Shannon, Leah Keogh and Siun Byrne.

Special shout-out to manager Gordon Keogh plus coaches JP Croke, Jim Kinsella and Vincent Byrne as well as Margaret Leonard, Loretta Mutton, Iluta Rathevica and Máire Doran.

And it’s not like camogie is an easy game. Having to gracefully chase after a tiny ball with a big stick whilst desperately trying not to accidentally knock out one of your teammates.

Taking place at St Peregrines – which is apparently a real place, and not an Ealing Comedy creation – it was always going to be a tough match, especially with an All-Ireland championship title up for grabs, but in the end, well, Wicklow made it look pretty darn easy.

And the win has made everyone at Éire Óg Greystones – and the entire county – pretty dang proud…
