This fella walks into the doctors…
o be honest, even GG was a little shocked agus mildly afraid
when we spotted this well-endowed plant swinging our way.
“It’s 32 years old,” said its proud owner, the name of this particular cacti being Biggus Phallus Maximus.
We reckon.
The occasion is The Rose Show, held this afternoon in the perfect surrounds of Delgany’s Old School House, and just the kind of timeless celebration of nature, beauty and, most importantly of all, community.
These are the kind of selfless, selfie-free gatherings that social media keyboard warriors like to kick and
wail about not happening anymore, and yet, whoop, here it is. The Delgany & District Horticultural Society have had their ears to the ground for decades upon decades, and their pure love for creating breathtaking beauty from that soil is plainly evident today.
Table after table of magnificent flowers, hearty vegetables and the
sort of prickly prizewinners that would make Esther Rantzen do a backflip. Magic.
With entries from Galway, Clonmel, Ardee in County Lough, The Naul in Dublin and all over Wicklow, the winners on the day included Vanessa Gulliver for her Summer Flowers display, the Sweet Pea crowns went to Clonmel’s David Moloney, Galway’s Mike Redfearn and Ardee’s Maria Melvin, in the roses section, Trevor Stevenson took home the Nancy O’Neill Cup and the Harrison Tankard whilst Carole O’Riordan won the Silver Spoon and Pat Thornton made the podium too.
When it came to the summer flower competition, there were wins for Tom Curtis, Pat Thornton, Richard Lowe and Trish Walsh, with Ellen Walsh winning in the plants division, whilst over in fruit and veg, Trevor Stevenson, David Warnock, Richard Lowe, Carole O’Riordan and Ruth Handy were all winners.
And if you missed today, fear not, for you’ll be able to catch the gang’s Dahlia Show at St Patrick’s National School on August 26th.
There’s also the Newcastle Flower Festival from 2pm to 5pm tomorrow, Sunday 25th, over in Newcastle Church, with each display depicting favourite hymns or church music. Admission is €10, and you can book on Eventbrite here.
Be sure to let them know GG sent you. Hadn’t heard about this one until today.
In the meantime, go explore The Delgany & District Horticultural Society here, and get in touch on email here.
