In June 2025, Greystones Library launched an inspiring art competition for all local primary schools, inviting students to create artwork inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The winning entries were selected to be featured in a 16-month school calendar, running from September 2025 to January 2027.

This calendar is part of Wicklow Libraries’ strategic commitment to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals by fostering collaboration among schools, families and the wider community. It uses creative engagement to promote environmental awareness, social responsibility and lifelong learning.

On Tuesday, 23rd September, the winning artists were celebrated at a special awards ceremony held in Greystones Library. Prizes were presented by Catherine Costello, librarian, alongside Cllr. Lourda Scott, who proudly sponsored the competition. Additional support came from Education for Sustainable Development.

Speaking at the event, the Cathaoirleach of Greystones Municipal District, Cllr. Lourda Scott said, “I am delighted to be part of this important step that local school-aged pupils are engaged in to help our community reach the Goals.

Emer O’Gorman, Chief Executive of Wicklow County Council, added, “This initiative reflects our commitment to embedding sustainability into everyday life. By engaging children and families through art and education, we are building a stronger, more climate-conscious Wicklow.”

Margaret Birchall, Wicklow County Librarian, noted, “Libraries are more than places for books—they are hubs for learning, creativity, and community action. This calendar is a wonderful example of how libraries can support the SDGs in meaningful and engaging ways.”

Families and schools are encouraged to pick up a copy of the calendar, which is now available at Greystones Library.

It is designed to help organise school life while keeping sustainability at the forefront.
