Is Greystones’ Infrastructure Completely Zoned Out?

Following a suspension of standing orders at the March Greystones Municipal District meeting, Cllr Scott said the decision reflects a clear message from local representatives that the Government must build communities as well as houses.

“With the decision to increase the population targets across the County, Greystones is estimated to grow by another 4,000 people in the next six years,” she said. “The pressure on school places is one of the most serious issues we face in the area.

“Every year I am contacted by families who face months of uncertainty around where their child will go to school, or if they will even get a place. Some families are being left behind altogether when it comes to getting a school place for their child in their own community. I am very worried that with the new housing targets that have been handed to us, this will only get worse without urgent action.”

Cllr Scott said the meeting with the Tánaiste must happen urgently and focus on securing firm commitments, not general assurances.

“The Department of Education is well aware of the housing targets and has made it clear in its own submission to the County Development Plan that the planned growth in Greystones will cause extra pressure on our schools. I want the Tánaiste to sit with the elected representatives of Greystones, who are hearing first hand about the problems families are facing, and tell us what is going to be done to resolve this.

“We are tired of receiving vague assurances that buildings will be delivered. The pace of delivery is nowhere near the pace of housing growth and this has to change.”

Scott also said that while Local Authorities have responsibility for zoning land, they have no role in delivering schools.

“It is very frustrating as a local councillor to be presented with plans for land zoning, yet the Council have no power to deliver the infrastructure that is needed. We need a shift in approach from Government towards building communities alongside housing.”

Cllr Scott said Greystones has already made a strong contribution to housing and will continue to do so, provided infrastructure keeps pace.

She stated that the meeting must now happen without delay and must lead to real outcomes.

“I look forward to a positive response from the Tánaiste and to hearing his plan for addressing these issues for our communities.”
