It’s Finally Easier To Get Out Of Bray

Minister of State with responsibility for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports, Séan Canney officially opened the Bray Transport Interchange today, 17th September 2025, on behalf of Wicklow County Council in partnership with the National Transport Authority (NTA).

This project has successfully delivered a high-quality transport interchange that facilitates seamless connections between key modes of transportation including walking, cycling, taxis, buses and railway services. The completed scheme has created a safer, more connected and high-quality public realm environment that complements the heritage of the station building while promoting development in the area.

Wicklow County Council’s Active Travel Vision aims for every resident in County Wicklow to use active travel options in their daily lives naturally and without hesitation. The Council has provided practical and safe options for residents to do so.

At the Bray Transport Interchange, Wicklow County Council, with funding and support from the Department of Transport through the NTA, has created a high-quality environment and a focal point for commuters and visitors. The improved and safer facilities around Bray Train Station will encourage more people to adopt sustainable methods of transport in their everyday lives.

The works included:

· Construction of realigned bus interchange facilities to provide a more comfortable and safer experience for customers, with enhanced bus parking and taxi spaces.

· Upgrading of pedestrian and cyclist facilities in the area, through the addition of widened footpaths and new pedestrian crossings.

· Landscaping improvements to enhance public spaces, including the installation of new seating areas, tree planting and the addition of cycle parking.

The project was facilitated and supported throughout by Iarnród Éireann, was designed by Atkins Réalis Consultancy and executed by contractors David Walsh Civil Engineering.

During the opening, Minister Canney stated: “I’m delighted to see the progress that has been made by the Active Travel teams within Wicklow County Council and the National Transport Authority to deliver this transformational project. Not only will this scheme offer safer facilities for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users, it will encourage a shift towards more sustainable forms of transport – walking, cycling, taking the bus or train. This project will be of great value to the local community by creating safer, user-friendly infrastructure that can be enjoyed by all.”

Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, Cllr. Melanie Corrigan, expressed her honour in being present alongside Minister Séan Canney to officially mark the opening of the Bray Transport Interchange scheme for Wicklow County Council. She noted that the scheme aims to provide a high-quality transport interchange that encourages more people to use sustainable transport and complements the heritage of Bray Daly Station. She believes the completed scheme has successfully achieved this objective.

Wicklow County Council Chief Executive Emer O’Gorman stated, “Wicklow County Council is pleased to support these important projects in partnership with the National Transport Authority.

“It shows our commitment to the move to more sustainable transport and the provision of high quality active travel projects in Co. Wicklow.”
