Joe Sweeney Has Passed

From Joe’s funeral service at The Holy Rosary on Tuesday, January 21st 2025, read by his granddaughters Rachel and Ally…

“The eldest of a large family of seven brothers and two sisters, 64 years ago Joe met the love of his life, nanny, and they have been inseparable for 64 years and have such a special bond,” they began.

“They have five children, Aileen, John, Ronan, Joanne and Siobhan, ten grandchildren, and as of two days ago, five beautiful great-grandsons. His whole life was in Greystones and his family.

“We had a childhood packed with memories of our grandad. He would collect us all from school every day, same parking spot and no parking ticket needed because he was Joe Sweeney!

“Grandad hated leaving Greystones, but his favourite places to visit were Centra, Paddy Power, AIB and Greystones Medical Centre! He would only leave on the odd occasion after much convincing coming from us all.

“Our favourite memory of Grandad, when he did leave, was to go to Shelbourne Park. He had greyhounds and would bring us all in there when they were running. The dog we remember most was ‘Where’s Joe?’, and he didn’t do too bad. We got a few trips to Shelbourne with him.

“Grandad never got on a plane. He was absolutely terrified of them, but he used to bring us all on the Stenaline HSS to Holyhead every single year for our trip. There would be about 15 of us. We’d get the train to Bangor, and go shopping. He’d give us all our spending money, and then off we went, and he’d wait for us in William Hill for the day.

“As we got older, some of us worked in the chipper. Who thought it was a good idea to have all of us mad hatters in one place? I have no idea.

“We have some videos of Grandad singing, dancing, talking to himself, and talking pure nonsense. We will cherish those memories forever.

“Once the chipper was closed, grandad would head over to The Beach House on Saturday night for some dancing with all of us, especially with nanny.

“He developed a flare for languages. He would burst out something in French or Irish, or in a foreign accent, and we wouldn’t have any idea what he was talking about.

“One thing he couldn’t live without was his phone. For a 92-year-old, he was still perfectly able to use his brand-new iPhone and would Facetime you until you answered. It didn’t matter what time it was, night or day. The only question he asked us at the end of the call was: ‘Do I look alright?!’

“Finally, we would like to say thank you to a number of people,” they continued.

“Thank you to all the carers, especially Michelle, Leila and Anna, who made sure to collect grandad’s paper every morning.

“We would like to express our gratitude to the Caremark and Home Instead teams who cared for Grandad so well at home and still care for Nanny.

“Thank you to all the staff at St Michael’s Hospital, who took care and showed so much kindness last year when he was there. We would like to thank all the doctors and nurses in Greystones Medical Centre who looked after Grandad for so many years.

“Finally, to Sinead, Brian and all of the staff in the nursing home in Kilmac, who cared for Grandad so well – we cannot thank you enough.

“I’d like to personally say a special thank you to Joanne and Siobhan for everything they have done for Grandad over the last few years. You have no idea how much we appreciate it.

“We have been inundated over the last few days with messages, comments, posts, texts – too many to even remember. Thank you for all of them. He would have loved it so much – he thinks he’s famous!”
