riting about the latest Katie Taylor win is a little like reporting that it was a little rainy in Ireland yesterday.

Nonetheless, the Bray fighter’s win against Kazakh challenger Firuza Sharipo on Saturday night was an impressive one, reflected in the unanimous verdict from the judges. The final scores were 98-92, 97-92 and 96-93 to Taylor.

The holder of the WBC, WBA, IBC and IBF titles had to work hard to retain her lightweight titles in this Liverpool bout though, with Sharipova’s reputation as a hard puncher justified on the night. The latter’s approach lent itself to the scrappy and by the time Sharipova was docked a point for holding in the sixth round, she already had a cut to the eye.

Taylor’s next fight looks set to be against Amanda Serrano in April, at Madison Square Garden, her promotor Eddie Hearn yesterday dubbing it “the biggest female fight possible”.
