ome woman for one woman, Maura Devereux managed to pack an awful lot into a mere 100 years…

And right to the end, it always felt that there was more fun to be had.

Maura Devereux is a woman we really wish we’d gotten to know properly.

We’d been told again and again by her neighbours on Cherry Lane, the Hayes clan, that she was a fountain of local knowledge, the wonders of golf, and the importance of timing when it came to jokes.

Last month, the lady celebrated her 100th birthday up in her beloved Delgany Golf Club, with the likes of her sisters Peggie and Anne, and children Brigitte, John and Louis present. And just to prove that she’s still the coolest swinger in town, Maura took to the piano for a singalong. Or two.

And man, did the lady love her golf. At the age of 96, Maura was still jumping on flights with her trusty clubs just to play a round on some fresh grass.

In truth, we had hoped to learn a lot more about this remarkable woman over the coming weeks, given that we were all set to sit down with Maura and go explore a history that stretched back through her family’s Cherry Orchard Tea Rooms, the ever-expanding Devereux clan and how she lived her life with one overriding conundrum – to tee or not to tee.

Sadly, we won’t get that chance now, Maura Devereux having passed today, Friday April 7th 2023. Having just moved into the Eyrefield Manor Nursing Home seven weeks ago, Maura was a strong, independent woman who was sharp and witty to the last.

We may have some words from her son, John, later on, but for now, condolences to all the Devereux family, and to all those who knew and loved Maura.

The funeral mass will take place in St Patrick’s Church, Kilquade on Monday 10th at 10am, after which Maura will be laid to rest in Redford Cemetery. More details here.
