t’s been quite a series of ups and refusals on the planning front over in Kilcoole in recent years.

152 WCC houses Lott Lane no.23504
For every Kilcoole Gateway success, there are quite a few developments that have fallen at the first hurdle.
In September 2022, planning was refused for 56 houses on the main street, around the back of the Mollys, a big jump back from the 267 applied for in September 2018.
In August 2022, Wicklow County Council put forward a development of 152 units on Lott Lane, promising an almost-equal split of social and affordable. Then, in May 2023, application 22826 was mysteriously withdrawn, before application no.23504 mysteriously started up without any apparent impact.
And then, also in May that year, two applications in the same week, both situated in the town centre, and both unsuccessful.
In October 2023, another application popped up for Lott Lane, this time from Ciaran and Simon Doyle, who were hoping to build 46 houses there. Application no.2360348 also got a return to sender.

no.23466 had Dwyer Nolan Developments Ltd hoping for 50 houses, but ultimately that application was deemed incomplete. They applied again on June 2nd 2023, this time as no.23509, for 50 houses on the same patch, and that got the thumbs down on

The WCC housing is currently under construction, 152 units under ref 23504. you can see its progress on google maps!
Ah, that application from WCC went in twice, the first withdrawn and the second – 23504 – remaining blank when it came to a decision. Nice. Have added that now…
Well looks like Kilcoole Village is surely becoming a town. I remember there as a child and it was quite quaint and when Glenroe was filmed there it was a lovely place to be. The rural parts of Kilcoole, Kilquade, Delgany and Kilpedder are on the way out unfortunately. Its really sad to see the demise of the community spirit and neighbourlyness gone in its place housing estates, new motorways, and dangerous country roads where traffic passes every other minute. We’ll soon have no fields left or hedgerows.
