Pear Twins Go From Very Rich To Filthy Rich

Who woulda thunk it, there’s money in going back to nature. And bottling it.

Having started out as little more than a pipe dream of getting it on with loads and loads of hot vegan chicks – man, they’re always the wildest – Dave and Stephen Flynn have seen their Happy Pear business enjoy another slightly ridiculous bumper year.

Thanks to the opening of their new 13,000-square-foot Pearville production facility in Kilcoole last year, and a little helping €1.5m grant, the Flynnstones have seen their little seed of an idea grow into a whopping great money tree.

Having gone from 100 staff last year to 170 this year, the lads have just reported a 40% increase in revenue to date this year.

Talk about rich food. But, hey, they kneaded the dough, so…

Despite the increase on their annual turnover of €4m, the expansion costs at Flynn & Flynn Global Trade Ltd – including staff costs going from €1.6m to €2.13m – meant a modest loss of €77,410 last year.

Still, there’s no doubt the future looks very bright for The Happy Pear, with the recent mercy opening in Clondalkin adding a third outlet to their two Greystones branches. A spokesman for the company said, “We hope to open another cafe in the Dublin area in 2017/18, and our third cookbook, published by Penguin, will be out in spring 2018.”

In the meantime, the lads will continue their tie-in with supermarket chain SuperValu, with new products being launched next week.

For those who really like to know their neighbours business – literally – the new accounts show the Pear’s cash pile grew considerably this year, going from €95,503 to €1.33m. The €1.5m grant saw the company’s shareholder funds increasing from €59,700 to €1.48m at the end of last year. As for the Flynns themselves – David, Stephen and Darragh, who all sit on the board – the aggregate pay to directors from the company last year totalled €95,568, which equals 2015’s total. By the end of the year, the business also owed the directors a total of €101,031 in loans.

Both David and Stephen have said their main goal is to one day earn enough money to one day afford full-length trousers.
