Grattan Park’s Josh On That Bondi Beach Attack

he last time we caught up with Josh Campbell and his life down under, it was the happy news that he and his brother Drew had proven themselves pretty much knockouts when it came to their charity boxing matches.

Josh won back in 2021, then younger brother Drew had his Rocky moment the following year.

Right now though, the entire Campbell family have found themselves shaken to the core by the tragic terror attack on Bondi Beach yesterday in which 12 people have died.

Having left the sunny climes of Grattan Park for damp, dank Australia six years ago, Josh Campbell was, he tells the Mirror today, having a few Sunday drinks with his friends in Revesis Bar, not far from the crime scene, when the attack occurred.

When the shots rang out across Bondi beach, there was a chaos in the bar, with people there jumping under tables.

“We were just a few minutes walk away from where the shooters were,” says Josh, “and just listening to a band. The walls are all glass and we could see people in the street running and screaming.”

Bizarrely, the band played on.

“But then they stopped, and all we could hear was ‘bang, bang, bang’. Then everyone hit the floor and absolute pandemonium kicked in. That’s me in the video clip, in the white shirt scrambling over a table…”

That’s when security locked the doors, unsure as to where the gunmen were, or where they were headed.

When the shooting ended a few minutes later, Josh and his friends thought it best to leave a building with glass doors and walls. And what greeted them outside was, he says, carnage.

“There were police cars and ambulances everywhere. We didn’t know that it was Jewish people who were being attacked. We were hearing reports that there were two shooters, and then three shooters, and that one got away, so we didn’t know what to do…”

Other than to phone home and let everyone know that they were safe.

Latest reports have a father and son duo, Sajid and Naveed Akram, as the alleged shooters.
