Greystones Community College were celebrating major news this week with the announcement that not one but two of their Junior Cycle students achieved some of the highest results in Ireland in the State Examinations 2023.

Two students at the school received the acclaim based on information collated from all schools throughout the country where a list of the highest achievers is compiled by the State Examinations Commission. GCC student Ella Macek (14) achieved the second highest grade in the whole country in her Junior Cycle Graphis exams.

To put this achievement in context, 15,000 students across the country take this subject from over 700 post primary schools. Ella’s grade was the second highest in the country, an astonishing achievement.

In addition to Ella’s success, another student at Greystones Community College was also recognised for achieving one of the highest grades in the country in the subject Applied Technology.

Andrew Gaube (15) achieved an outstanding result in his Junior Cycle exam which placed him in the top 10 results in Ireland this year.

Both Ella and Andrew were presented with certificates of achievement by the Technology Teachers Association. Mr. Stephen O’Brien, Chairperson of the Technology Teachers Association of Ireland said “To be able to recognise these achievements, we liaise with the State Examinations Commission who kindly provide us with a list of the most meritorious students. The techo teachers association then provide certificates to these top high achieving students in the country” he said.

These results are testament to the hard work and support provided by Greystones Community College Technology and Graphics teacher Mr. Ciaran Doyle, who has worked with and mentored both Ella and Andrew over the past three years.

Commenting on these achievements, Greystones Community College Principal Mr. Ruairi Farrell remarked that this achievement shows how the school is delivering excellence in education at the highest level and supporting students to reach their full potentially academically. “It is remarkable for our school to have two students among the very best in the country in our very first year of Junior Cycle examinations.

“The calibre of these students is without question, and this coupled with the dedication and hard work of our teaching staff providing the winning formula for success.

“It is with great pride that I congratulate Andrew, Ella and Mr. Doyle on this remarkable accomplishment on behalf of the whole school community.”
