It’s Always Sonny’s In Greystones

hen it came to naming their groovy restaurant at the top of Church Road back in 2020, it didn’t take long for father and son Declan and Jason to come up with the perfect name.

They just had to look one generation back, and to the man without whom neither of them would be here.

And so it was that Greystones’ funkiest eatery was named Sonny’s, the old man looking down on his son and his grandson every single day, thanks to a watchful mural situated at the heart of the restaurant.

“Sonny worked hard all his life on the building sites to provide for his family,” says Declan, “and we’re paying tribute to that hard work by giving the restaurant both his name but also, to reflect that working life, an industrial theme.”

“It’s a reminder of Sonny, his life and his work ethic,” adds Jason. “It’s also a reminder that, if you’re going to make it in this life, you have to work hard. You have to be industrious…”

It’s a plan that has clearly worked well for the McLoughlins, with Sonny’s managing, in three short years, to become one of Greystones’ most popular eateries.

Especially when the weather’s good. Or it’s raining. Or there’s a match on the big telly. Or you just have a few hours to kill.

“We designed Sonny’s in such a way that the front can be completely open, to let all that glorious sun in,” says Declan, “or we can wrap everything up tight, and make it into one giant snug, away from that not-so-glorious Irish rain.”

Sonny – who passed away in 1994 – would be proud. And he’d be pretty happy with the menu too, his all-time favourite meal being a beer and a burger.

Sonny’s serves an array of burgers, Mexican food, authentic Italian wood-fired pizza, ribs, wings and whatever-you’re-having-yourself. There’s also a fine big drinks menu, from milkshakes, beer and wine to spirits, cocktails and the granddaddy of them all, a pint of Guinness.

“Sonny’s is more than just a place to get a bite to eat,” finishes Jason. “It’s a place to meet for a coffee, or have a night out with friends, to watch a match, or just get yourself well fed.”
