Wicklow Sinn Féin TD John Brady has cautiously welcomed the decision by Transport Infrastructure Ireland to confirm that Herbert Road, both on and off the N11, will remain open.

“I cautiously welcome the common-sense decision finally taken by Transport Infrastructure Ireland to confirm that Herbert Road, both on and off the N11, will remain open. TII has now accepted that the proposed closure would have delivered relatively lower bus priority benefits, something that was stated clearly from the outset.”

Deputy Brady said that while the decision is welcome, vigilance is still required.

“Transport Infrastructure Ireland states that following preliminary intervention measures the closure of the Herbert Road will not be progressed at this point in time.

While I welcome the fact that this proposal will not be progressed at this point, it is vital that we ensure it never happens. Closing Herbert Road would have had a negative impact on traffic flow in Bray and the surrounding areas, adding further congestion and placing additional pressure on the town itself. Keeping the road open helps to alleviate those pressures and is the right decision for the community.”

He paid tribute to the local campaign that opposed the proposed closure.

“I want to pay tribute to the people of Bray and further afield who campaigned tirelessly to keep Herbert Road open. Local residents, businesses and commuters spoke with experience and clarity, having seen first-hand the damage that a closure would have caused. Their collective efforts ensured that common sense prevailed.”

Deputy Brady said the decision highlights the importance of listening to communities.

“This decision shows the importance of listening to local communities, and I will continue to work to ensure that any future transport measures for the area are practical, evidence-based and do not undermine the wellbeing of the town.”
