Your Greystones Week

Some of GG’s more astute readers may have noticed already, but, we’re in lockdown, people…

So we can hopefully kick Covid-19’s ass, self-isolation is the soup of the day, and that means our usually jam-packed Greystones calendar is looking very different today.

And with new restrictions just announced, that limit us to keeping within 2km of our homes (handy interactive map to check your circle here), not sure there’s much point in checking out the beautiful trails out there. Then again, our guide does feature lots of shots, and video, if you want to go for a virtual walk.

Talking of lots of shots and videos, there’s also our extensive archives of vintage photographs, histories and interviews with the good, the bad and the incredibly smart to work your way through. Only took us eight years to put together, and we’re far from finished putting all the jigsaw pieces of Greystones’ colourful past together. You can map your journey right here.

And do think about your neighbours who are trying to keep their businesses alive during this difficult time – from shops and restaurants to theatres and beauty shops. Those who can have moved online – so, go join them there. You’ve certainly got the time.

We have the latest list of those businesses that can stay open right here, as determined by the Department Of Health on Friday, March 27th, and the public buildings, services and parks – as determined by Wicklow County Council on March 28th – here. Naturally, the former’s latest release has affected your access to much of the latter.

We’ve also put together a list of local volunteers, free online classes, etc, right about here, and 10 Things To Do About Nothing To Do right here.

Also, check on any vulnerable neighbours. Pretend they’re your dad, or your mum. Only, they won’t keep reminding you of all your bad choices.

There are also a number of groups and individuals now ready and willing to help the elderly in our community. And you can join them. Speaking of which, the number for Alone, the charity helping the elderly living on their own, is 0818222024.

We’re also putting up music mixes regularly on GG, which might just help past the time, with a little singing, a little dancing, maybe even a miniature party or two

For the kids, there’s our Splash Of Colour art competition, or our annual Battle Of The Bands furry freak-out. Both come with big, groovy prizes too!

And maybe you’re a poet, and you don’t even know it?! There’s also a poetry competition on de go down at Theatre Lanedetails here.

You can keep up with what’s going on in regard to Covid-19 in the town right about here.

In the meantime, here’s a rather scaled down calendar. And do think twice about going anywhere that there may be a crowd. Or a queue…

Thursday 9th April

Day: 15°Hi RealFeel® 18° RealFeel Shade™ 15° Periods of cloud and sunshine
Night: 10°Lo RealFeel® 10° Partly cloudy

It’s become something of a Thursday tradition, here and abroad – every week, at 8pm, get out on your doorstep, or at your window, and give a round of applause to all the fighting the good fight against Covid-19. This week, it’s Clap For Carers. Which is a slightly unfortunate title

And later, you can celebrate with a Radiohead concert, 2000’s Live From A Tent In Dublin being broadcast live on YouTube at 10pm.

Every Thursday at 8pm, Anne Sexton Pilates are online for a General Mat Class  – info here.

There’s a whole world of free online out there right now – and given that we’ve all got a little spare time, to stop you going completely spare, we’ve rounded up some of the biggest and brightest right about here.

For the kids, there’s our Splash Of Colour art competition, or our annual Battle Of The Bands furry freak-out. Both come with big, groovy prizes too! As does Hub13’s all-genres art competition. Then again, maybe you just want to make fun of eggs.

There’s also the groovy Artzone, hosting art workshops for kids at noon on Tuesdays and Fridays over on Facebook. Plus, Joe Wicks is on YouTube to wake everyone up with some morning exercises, and Cosmic Kids Yoga to bring ’em back down, sensory activities and silly songs to be sung  here, National Geographic quizes here, Outdoor Bingo here, you can cook or bake yummy treats, listen to a story here, or go take a webcam tour of Dublin Zoo, San Diego Zoo, Victoria Zoo down under, or the Monterey Bay Aquarium

The whole family can also go birdwatching through your window with this handy chart.

And for those who need their coffee fix, but just don’t want to be queuing for half the day for it, Wicklow’s McCabe Coffees are now doing deliveries – using fully compostable bags – straight to your door. Bada-BEAN! You can check out the details on their website here, and get in touch directly on info@mccabecoffee.com or 0876840039.

Thanks to that bastard Covid-19, SuperValu will be giving over 7am t0 9am to the elderly who need to get their shopping done, whilst Lidl have chosen 9am to 11am. For those elderly who like a bit of a lie-in of a morning

And for those needing their daily God fix, the Holy Rosary are broadcasting their daily masses to the masses online right here.

Given that we’re deep in Lockdown mode until Easter Sunday, best thing you can do right now is get yourself out into the wilds of Wicklow virtually. We have tons of pics and videos to trek through…

If you are looking for something constructive to do with your time, there are plenty of volunteer groups popping up around the town and beyond to help the elderly and vulnerable. You can also, of course, go check on any old people living alone in your immediate circle…

With Greystones’ restaurant, bars and theatres closed because of Covid-19, many eateries are now turning to takeaways as their lifeline. So, grab something yummy for your tummy, and help a neighbour out.

There’s also the beautiful gesture of a gift voucher, for the receiver and the giver – and, right now, the business itself.

From Monday to Friday, 12 noon to 4pm, Domino’s in Charlesland have some yummy lunch specials, including personal pizzas with four toppings for just €4, small for €7, medium for €10 and large for €13. Have your lunch deliverd! Nice.

Also, in loving memory of the recently departed FourFront Games, you can check out the cunning gang of four’s Puzzle Map of the town, with 10 clues and 10 locations to work your way through. Sweet.

Put a beep-beep in your leap with Boogie Bounce Greystones, who are moving all their classes onto their Facebook Group Page until the lockdown is over
